The Many Names for Discriminants | HSC Tip

Roots, x-intercepts, zeros, solutions… why so many words to describe the same thing?

Well the answer lies in the fact that mathematical concepts are so versatile and used to describe many things.

One of the first things I tell my students when introducing a new topic is the many ways in which questions can appear.

Being aware of these synonyms is the first step in maximising your marks in all areas of mathematics!

It is in this way that markers can trick students casing confusion and loosing train of thought. This is also another important tool that teachers and markers can use to distinguish, say a band 5 from a band 6 student.

I, Justine, your tutor at Compass understand the ways in which teachers can challenge and trick students. I want to help YOU stand out and maximise your marks.

In saying this, I have put together, using an online virtual whiteboard, to help showcase the main points and ideas when learning discriminants.

This video involves many examples to help deepen your understanding of DISCRIMINANTS!

The following video takes you through the genesis of discriminants and just how useful they are in your understanding of parabolic functions.

NOTE: In the last portion of the video, I explore discriminants in a slightly more challenging question that is more suited to HSC style questions! So stay tuned for that!

So if you want to bump up your marks to achieve your band 6 goals just simply watch the following video.
