Hyperbola without the hyperbole! | HSC Tip

Updated: Apr 15, 2018

After many encounters with HSC students, it has occurred to that most of the time one will be discouraged to sit down and study because of confusion. This can be due to a lack of understanding or because of a lack of effort.

The good news is that I’m here to stop just that. This can easily be fixed by applying a methodical approach through a list of steps and formulas.

It is important to understand that not every question is the same and hence the steps to follow will not always be the perfect guide. In saying this, it has been proven that through a list of steps, it can guide one to grasp a broader understanding of the topic at hand and develop systematic approach, resulting in less confusion and a greater willingness to study hard.

As an educator and an advocate for mathematics, it is my main concern to create a sense of clarity in the minds of those that I teach. I follow a simple but effective approach.

I tell all my students that once you understand the foundation of a concept and the reasoning behind each step, then that same idea can be applied to ANY question of ANY difficulty.

In the following video, I showcase the simple steps to follow when graphing hyperbolas.

The first half of the video is important in developing a foundation to the topic, while the remaining of the video explores how to apply the same steps in a variety of examples.

The reason I place emphasise on this idea is because that is the essence of the HSC!

Through this video, I hope to guide you and enlighten you with a breakdown of the steps when graphing hyperbolas.
